Aunt Vera’s Tea Cakes

Aunt Vera’s Tea Cakes

1 cup sugar
1 stick margarine
1 egg
2 cups self-rising flour
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Cream margarine, sugar, egg.
Add flour + vanilla.
Drop onto creased pan one 1/2 t at a time (1/2 teaspoon).
Bake in 375 degree oven until brown.

When I was seven, for my birthday, my grandmother gave me my first recipe book. It was filled with recipes from my Granny, but also from her sisters. A way, I am sure, of welcoming into the family tradition of baking and cooking. My Aunt Vera was a teacher, and what strikes me about this recipe is the clarity in penmanship, as well as how it is a simple enough recipe for a child to execute independently.
